Recently, TPM 3D received a special task: to restore the skull of a Megantereon with SLS 3D printing technology.

This Megantereon skull model has many internal cavity structures, and the model will be directly used as an exhibition. Therefore, this task requires that the printed model should have good accuracy, durability, be convenient to transport, and without any support structures. After receiving the commission, TPM3D’s engineers evaluated and scanned the fossil restoration model obtain 3D data for restoration. After completing the scan and data restoration, TPM3D adopted SLS printing to print the model with PA12.

Thanks to the advantage of SLS technology without supporting structures, as well as the patented active cooling technology of TPM3D’s printing system, and the one-stop part & powder processing station, the cooling and cleaning efficiency of the model was greatly improved. The entire pre-processing and printing task was completed within 5 hours. Finally, we got the printed Megantereon skull model with a smooth delicate surface, and a bright white color.

Printed Model

After printing and post processing, TPM3D engineer scanned the model again and the results of full-scale inspection showed that laser sintering technology can print complex curved surface fossil models with high accuracy, which can meet the task requirements of fossil restoration work. Compared with other 3D printing technologies, this model has advantages in strength and durability. The client highly praised the printing service of TPM3D. This indicates that SLS has great application value in the field of digital archaeological restoration.
