China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently released the first batch of “Typical Additive Manufacturing Application Scenarios”, identifying 36 representative applications across multiple fields. In the medical category of “personalized orthotic device printing,” TPM3D was recognized for its work in customized production of scoliosis orthoses or spinal braces, becoming one of the first 3D printer manufacturers and service providers to be listed.
3D Printing Advancing Personalized Healthcare
In recent years, 3D printing has become a core digital technology in healthcare due to its precision, customization, flexibility, and rapid production. It aligns perfectly with the principles of precision medicine and digital healthcare, and is increasingly applied in orthopedics and rehabilitation. In particular, SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) 3D printing of customized scoliosis orthoses is gaining adoption among patients seeking effective, tailored treatments.
Challenges of Traditional Orthoses
Conventional orthoses are produced through manual plaster molding, trimming, thermoplastic layering, cutting, polishing, and strap installation. The process is time-consuming and uncomfortable for patients, particularly adolescents. Traditional orthoses are also bulky and difficult to conceal, which can interfere with daily life and schooling.
SLS 3D Printing: Precision, Efficiency, Comfort
TPM3D employs 3D scanning and specialized design software to create precise, patient-specific orthosis models. These models are then produced using industrial-grade SLS 3D printers and finished with chemical vapor smoothing, resulting in products that are smooth, durable, waterproof, and antimicrobial. The production process is greatly simplified, while the orthoses are lighter, more aesthetic, and better fitted than conventional versions, minimizing impact on adolescents’ daily activities.
Collaborative Innovation in Medical 3D Printing
TPM3D continues to promote SLS 3D printing in healthcare through collaboration with the Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine Transformation Research Institute and Zhongshan Chen Xinghai Hospital. Together, they established the 3D Printing Application Center at Chen Xinghai Hospital in Guangdong, focusing on orthopedic and rehabilitation applications. The center develops customized healthcare and rehabilitation products, including:
-
Scoliosis orthoses
-
TPU orthotic insoles and cervical supports
-
Ankle-foot orthoses, knee braces, wrist and elbow supports
The center has delivered over 100 successful cases, providing personalized solutions that improve treatment outcomes and patient comfort.
TPM3D looks forward to expanding partnerships with hospitals and patients, offering end-to-end services including design, technology, and customized products, and continuing to advance 3D printing applications in digital and precision medicine.
